Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

By Chris D'Cruz, Keeper of the Universal Life Secrets
Dr. Joe Vitale, motivational speaker and author, often says: "the fastest way to get where you want is to be happy with where you are."
Believe it or not, this mindset works! It may take some changes and soul searching on your part, but in the end, it'll be more than worth it to adopt this positive mentality.
While you should strive to make your dreams come true, concentrate, also, on yourself and your journey. When you spend less time wishing things were different and more time accepting what you've got, you've already found a sense of peace and happiness right there.
6 tips that can help you become who you want to be right now:
1. Feel gratitude. When you concentrate on the big picture, it's easier to exhibit feelings of gratitude. When you're grateful, you remain positive and appreciative of every joyful moment in life.

Sometimes people get too caught up in a sense of entitlement, which leads to negative feelings. Concentrating on gratitude, instead, will get you where you desire.

2. Be optimistic. Some say that life is all about optimism. And it's true! An optimistic attitude is one of the few things you need to succeed.
If you're trying to achieve a concrete goal, optimism will help you accomplish it.
If you're trying to change your mindset, optimism will make the task easier.
Optimism can be the driving force that keeps you going.

3. Exhibit the traits you desire. It was Gandhi who said that you should be the change you want to see in the world.

With these wise words in mind, you can replace wanting with some bold action. With some persistence and perseverance, you can make it happen.

4. Adopt a prosperous mindset. Take a moment to determine what prosperity means to you. Are you hoping for money, a fulfilling career, or a relationship that lasts a lifetime?

Know what you want, then adopt the right mindset. Once you do, you've then set yourself in the right direction toward your goals.

5. Find the silver lining. As you go through life, you will no doubt realize that things are not always going to go your way. But even in tough times you need to keep your chin up.

Instead of allowing negativity to consume your life, seek out the silver lining. This fresh attitude can be the difference between being held hostage and achieving your goals.

6. Take small steps.
When the place you're going seems far away and unachievable, it's important to break it down into small steps.

Give yourself an achievable goal with a realistic time frame. Break that one down into smaller goals.
When you avoid getting overwhelmed, you'll gain the confidence to persevere.
You're Already There
It's a good idea to practice one of these tips at a time until you've incorporated them into your life. Perhaps you can spend a week perfecting one strategy and, then the next week, add another one to your repertoire while continuing with the first one. Soon enough, you'll be a natural at all of them!
Once you choose a powerful and positive mindset, you'll find that you've already achieved much of what you want.
Just remember: You already have the traits, mindset, and lifestyle you desire, and you know that success is inevitable, but only when you have the will to break through the obstacles in your mind!

Internet Speed reducing in India

NEW DELHI:
Even as other countries worked to enable better internet connections for their citizens, in India the speed of internet connection has come down in the last one year.
According to a report by Akamai, a firm that runs a globally distributed network of servers, in India the average internet speed was 0.8mbps in Q3 of 2010. This, according to the report, amounted to a -6.9% quarterly decline and a -9.1% yearly decline. India was the only country to see the fall in internet speed among the 12 Asian countries that were covered in the study.

According to Akamai, the average internet speed in the world was registered at 1.9mbps. South Korea topped the list of countries with fastest internet connection with average speed of over 13mbps. In the same list, India ranked 143. Among the table of 45 countries for which data was made available in the Akamai report, only Egypt and Sudan fared worse than India.
While number of broadband subscribers has increased in India, the quality of connection remained poor. "Though online research appears to indicate that the Indian government considers connections above 256 Kbps to be 'broadband', the continued growth in the percentage of connections below that threshold (2mbps) should be of some concern," the report noted. In India, it found that over 35% internet connections had a speed of 256kbps or less.
In the National Broadband Plan, which was prepared in December last year, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) suggested that minimum broadband speed should be increased to 512kbps from January 1, 2011.
"It is universally recognized that the minimum speed as per definition of broadband in India is very low i.e. 256kbps. What has been proposed by the Authority as part of the National Broadband Plan is a minimum download speed of 512 Kbps immediately and 2 Mbps by January 1, 2015," noted TRAI. "It is absolutely essential that this definition is adopted; failing which, there will be serious quality of service issues."
However, four months later, the recommendations are yet to be enforced and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) continue to offer "broadband" plans with 256kbps speed.
Sources allege that most of private ISPs don't want the government to increase the minimum broadband speed. Broadband users claim these service providers sell high-speed internet connections but with "ridiculous data limits of 5GB per month". The practice, termed 'fair usage policy', stipulates that once a subscriber has consumed the allotted data, his speed is reduced to 256kbps, in some cases from as high as 4mbps.
"Even though the high-speed internet plans are marketed as those with unlimited data transfer, the reduction in speed virtually renders the internet connection unusable," said a broadband user. "By providing 256kbps they can still claim to provide broadband services. ISPs do it so that they can sell their 'speed boost' services. If the government increases the minimum speed of broadband in India, this malpractice can be stopped."
In the last few years, availability of good and robust internet connection has come to be regarded as a vital parameter of development. In fact, Finland last year made internet connection a "legal right" for its citizens. In 2009, a French court termed access to "internet a fundamental right".

India not serious about unearthing black money in Swiss banks, says whistleblower

NEW DELHI: Rudolf Elmer, a rare whistleblower who has brought out much information on secret Swiss banks accounts, has accused the Indian government of not being serious enough in getting details of black money stashed away in Swiss banks.

In his first statement on Indian accounts in Swiss banks after being released from jail, Elmer said, "The Indian government doesn't do enough." He said society has to put pressure on the government to act. "India is a big country, which is getting stronger by the day. It has the negotiating power," he told an Indian news channel.

Elmer said many Indian companies and rich Indians, such as cricketers and filmstars, were using tax havens line Cayman Islands for banking. While pointing out that there were several Indian names in the list of those evading tax that he had brought out in 2008, Elmer refused to discuss any specifics regarding Indians. He is facing investigations in Switzerland for breaching secrecy laws of his country.

Elmer said the US was the only government which was serious about ending tax evasion and other illegal activities surrounding banking in tax havens. Recent reports pointed out that Swiss banks had started providing information to US authorities of American citizens who held accounts with them.

He called for global commitment to fight tax evaders, calling them criminals. "There is a need for global commitment and action," Elmer, who was a senior executive of Swiss bank Julius Bar, said.

Elmer has been waging a very public battle against tax evasion and banking secrecy of Switzerland. He was arrested, jailed and again arrested. In January 2011, he handed over a CD containing at least 2,000 names of tax evaders who used Switzerland to hide their assets to Wikileaks. The list is yet to be made public.

Copywriting Secrets

Before you even write a single word of your copy, you must have these things in order - otherwise everything else you do afterwards will be a total failure
Where as the headline is the most important element to your sales letter, market research is the single most important aspect of your sales copy as a whole. It is your market research that will help you craft that perfect sales message and write that headline which will appeal to your target audience and make them buy whatever it is you are selling to them.
Identify Your Customer
Who is your target audience? Are they male or female? What is their age group? What do they do for a living?
What is their biggest problem? What motivates them? People will do almost anything to avoid pain. Moving away from pain is a greater motivator than moving towards pleasure.
Don't make the mistake of thinking everyone is your market, as most people tend to do when writing their copy or starting their business. You need to be laser targeted so you can get the very best results and make the most sales, because you spend more time on those that do or could want it, than on the vast majority that aren't, and who're only wasting your time and effort.
Know the market you are selling to. What type of language do they use? Every market tends to have their own terminology that they like to use. If you were in a golf market for example, you would use terms like "birdies" and "eagles", or that you'd use a "9 Iron" or "Pitching wedge" Learn their language, and use it so that they trust you more because you are "one of them" and not some outsider who only cares more about selling to them, than about them.
Talk to them in a way you'd talk to a friend in a bar conversation. What would you say to a friend who has a problem and you have the exact solution to it? Would you be get into salesman mode or would you talk to them, understand the problem they are going through, and subtly working your product solution into the conversation and how it will help them. How It would make their life so much better once they buy whatever it is you are selling to them
Write how you speak. Don't be too "salesy" and use hypey language that will put people off from you.
People will only buy from those they like and trust. If they don't trust you, they'll never buy from you.

How To Develop a Marketing Strategy in 5 Easy Steps

The benefits of a planned marketing strategy are numerous. Business owners often rely solely on their intuition to make business decisions. While this informal knowledge is important in the decision making process, it may not provide you with all the facts you need to achieve marketing results. A marketing strategy will help you in defining business goals and develop activities to achieve them.

Here's How:

1. Describe your company's unique selling proposition (USP).
2. Define your target market.
3. Write down the benefits of your products or services.
4. Describe how you will position your products or services.
5. Define your marketing methods. Will you advertise, use Internet marketing, direct marketing, or public relations?

Tips:

1. Your Unique Selling Proposition sets you out from the rest, don't try to develop a marketing plan without one.
2. It's important that you have a budget developed for your marketing plan. Marketing is an investment.
3. Revisit your marketing plan at least once every quarter. Are you on target? Do you need to revise it?

What You Need:

* A place to concentrate.
* A pen or pencil.
* A notebook or journal.

How To Find And Sell To Your Target Market

When I teach small business classes on marketing strategy, I often ask participants the question, "Who are your customers? Who will buy your product?" I am often surprised that otherwise savvy small business people either have no idea who will buy from them, or they assume that 'everyone' will.

Assumptions like this can lead to wrong decisions, wrong pricing, wrong marketing strategy – and ultimately, business failure.

The most successful small businesses understand that only a limited number of people will buy their product or service. The task then becomes determining, as closely as possible, exactly who those people are, and 'targeting' the business's marketing efforts and dollars toward them.

You, too, can build a better, stronger business, by identifying and serving a particular customer group – your target market.

One of the first things you need to do is to refine your product or service so that you are NOT trying to be 'all things to all people.' Become a specialist!

For example, in my business, an eco-tourism company, we made some specific decisions early in our market planning. As a charter boat business, we knew that there were plenty of fishing charter operators in the area, and 'party boats' as well. So we decided that we would offer sightseeing or special event charters, and that we would not allow alcohol on board, or fishing rods. Yes, this decision eliminated a percentage of the market – but it also gave us a 'niche' that we could capitalize on, and expanded our market in a way that other charter operators could not take advantage of.

Next, you need to understand that people purchase products or services for three basic reasons:

* To satisfy basic needs.
* To solve problems.
* To make themselves feel good.

You'll need to determine which of those categories your product or service is the solution to, and be prepared to market it accordingly.

Your product or service may fit more than one category, too – our charter business primarily targets folks who just want to feel good – spending a day out on the water, relaxing and being waited on. But it also targets people who have visitors coming from out of town, or even overseas, because we represent a solution to the problem of "What will we do while our company is here? How can we entertain them, or show them our area?"

The next step in creating an effective marketing strategy is to zero in on your target market. Continue on to the next page to learn how to use market segmentation to define your target market.

What is a limited Partnership?

Business partnerships can be either general or limited, and as far as tax codes are concerned, exist as long as profits, losses and costs of a business are shared. While general partnerships are more common, limited partnerships are a popular method of raising capital from passive investors who prefer to not be involved in day-to-day business operations. Limited partnerships (LPs) have two sets of partners, namely one or more general partners who have personal liability and one or more limited partners who are not liable for debts. Business owners who do not want the liability for the debts incurred by the corporation prefer this option. Limited partners usually do not play any role in the day-to-day management of the company.

Pros of Limited Partnerships:

* Generally, pass-through taxation is applicable to limited partnerships, meaning that the tax burden is passed on to the partners instead of the partnership itself. Thus, profit earnings are passed on to the partners in the form of wages, income, and profit payments and each partner pays tax that is proportionate to his individual share of profits.
* A business can obtain much-needed investment capital by giving more passive investors the option of reducing their risks by becoming limited partners
* Since there is no direct involvement of limited partners in the management of the business, general partners enjoy full autonomy and have the right to make important business decisions.
* In the case of a general partnership, all partners are responsible for the debts and other liabilities. The liability of a limited partner does not exceed his capital investment in the company.

How to Start Your Business

Many of us dream of working from home, setting our own hours and being our own bosses. Often times we see advertisements online and in print media, claiming thousands of dollars per week for stay-at-home jobs. These, of course, are scams which want you to order some fairly redundant, freely available information for a hefty price. Real home businesses start small with realistic profit expectations. They often fail, but with the proper discipline and acumen, they can succeed. After all, Steve Jobs started Apple (AAPL) as a home business out of his parent’s garage. People often consider home businesses for a variety of reasons. Common ones include:

* Supplementary, side income to a primary job for a spouse
* Inability to leave the home (injury, pregnancy, etc.)
* Desire to become an entrepreneur
* Having a marketable idea, and enough free cash flow to explore it

Home Businesses are Lemonade Stands

You can start a home business selling anything. The range is only limited by your imagination and state laws. Let’s take the simplest business model for a home business, a lemonade stand. A lemonade stand has no additional real estate costs, as it is set up in your own front yard. You are responsible for controlling the production of the lemonade, and you are clear on the profit margin – what you make between the cost of a pitcher of lemonade and your asking price. You are aware that any changes to the weather – the main variable – will affect your supply and demand. You know that if you can’t sell your product in time, your product will go to waste and equal lost profits, or at least cause a surplus in your inventory. As simple as it is, this classic example has all the components of a small home-based business.
How should we go about starting a home business? Here are some things to do to prepare:

* Know your own talents
o What are you good at?
o Do you have a marketable skill?
* Know your strengths and weaknesses
o Focus on your strengths
o Find other people who can help you complete tasks which you are weak at. These can include remote employees also looking to work from home, or your family and close friends.
* Organize your ideas
o Decide which ones are feasible
o Write down a comprehensive business plan

If you are focusing on an outsourced contract service, you may need to build a work portfolio to advertise your previous works. For example, graphic and web designers need comprehensive portfolios to show clients. Virtual assistants need testimonials and free consultations for clients.

If you wish to focus on a product based business, such as making quilts or gift baskets, you need to have a realistic production bottleneck based on your current capabilities. Assess the base cost of your product and the profit margin. If you are a one-man operation, it is not realistic to meet 100 orders daily. Start small, and don’t bite off more than you can chew. Grow slowly, and hire more people to help if you have steady orders coming in. Set order limits to avoid being swamped with orders and losing punctual credibility.
Reviewing your Business Model and Cash Flow

Now you have to see if your business model can actually be profitable. If you were previously living paycheck to paycheck with little cash savings, then starting a home business can be an incredibly stressful venture. If you have substantial savings, however, this can be far easier and allow more clarity in your decisions.

For example, if you decide to sell small handmade gifts for $20 each, and you are able to produce and sell ten per day at a materials cost of $15, you could theoretically earn $50 per day, and up to $1,500 per month. That’s an extremely optimistic example, and even working without a break 365 days through the calendar year, you would only make $18,000 annually. That seems like a lot of work for a mediocre paycheck. However, if you ramp up your production capabilities and hire some assembly line workers, you could easily double or triple your salary. Even better, you could hire on a team manager to oversee the operations and be able to take some time off as your venture runs itself. The time and effort needed to make a product is a key variable in the survivability of most home businesses.

A low-margin, high-volume approach, like the example mentioned above, is bound to be more successful than a high-margin, low-volume approach, which many home businesses attempt. For example, if you are able to produce homemade pottery for $10 each and customers are willing to pay $100 for each piece, but you are only able to produce one per week, then you would only make less than $360 monthly, or $4,320 annually, which would be impossible to live on. This is a huge obstacle for many entrepreneurs attempting to start an art-based home business such as sculpture, painting or photography, since your choice of helpers would be limited by skill and their impact on your product’s signature style.

If your home business is meant to supplement your primary income, it may be a much less stressful venture; after all, if it falls through you still have your regular job. However, if you plan to devote all your time to your home business, you have to make sure you have enough savings to make it through some rough patches, especially at the beginning, when initial setup costs, especially advertising, can be staggering and send your monthly balances deep into the red. While there are no shortcuts in home businesses, as many advertisers claim, hard work and persistence can pay off big in the long run.

Overcome Advertising Blindness!

Overcome Advertising Blindness!

By Warren Contreras
a.k.a. Oldbuddy

This is a FREE report and meant to be passed around to your friends. If you paid anything for it, go find the dirty stinking crook that robbed you and scream at them!

If you've been trying to make money online and spend large amounts of time and or money advertising, you have no doubt noticed a sharp drop in your response rate. This is due to Advertising Blindness.

When I first came online in September of 2000, you could put an ad just about anywhere online and get a 2 or 3 percent response rate. I can clearly remember 20 or 30 percent from good free offers, but Good Luck Getting That Today!

The population of the Internet in general and especially those looking for extra money to offset our troubled economy, has EXPLODED. I know you probably identify that word with
hype, but in this case it's much too mild.

Every single moment you spend almost anywhere online today is filled with exposure to some form of advertising messages. As a result, most of us are becoming blinded to all but the very simple ads that grab our attention fast.

If we don't “Get It” in a second or two, it's all over! So the bottom line is, if you want to earn online today, you desperately need to find ways to overcome, or even take advantage of Advertising Blindness!

What I discovered is that by using online programs that pay for referrals down many levels, you can enlist all the referrals you get, to advertise for BOTH of you and grow exponentially.

One FREE place to advertise that gets massive attention is Craigslist! Advertising the old sofa you need to get rid of, or even getting customers for your used car business is pretty simple, but when you start trying to recruit people for a money making
venture, you have about as much chance of success as you would have smuggling dope.

People on Craigslist are rabid about chasing us off, except in the Sm Biz Ads section, where I am happy to confine my posts. As long as you abide by the Terms of Service, it's not going
to be hard to stay out of trouble. I post one ad every day or two, so I never post more often than 3 posts every 48 hours. Remember, use a headline that will attract the attention of other people who are posting in this section. Most of them are not getting any results from their own ads, so they are a prime target. We give our report away free to remove any hesitation.

Constantly keep in mind you're NOT trying to make a sale, you only want them to grab your free report so they can read it later when they're not busy. If they like what they read and join with us, they are going to be advertising for all of us!

Pretty soon we create a phenomenon I call Bandwagon Marketing. You won't notice it until you get a few active referrals working on your behalf, but the more people see the same program, the more likely they are enticed to jump on the bandwagon. Just have patience and spend the 5 minutes it takes every few days to post an ad on your local Craigslist or one of the surrounding cities. Don't worry if it's not one with hoards of traffic, they tend to push ads
off faster anyway and we only need a couple of people ready to take action in order to get this money making machine rolling. If people can identify you as a local, it adds to the impact, so I leave the local telephone number to my voice mail box (I use a Magic Jack). The website I promote to gain that leverage is http://oldbuddy.angryhosting.com

The biggest reason I use this, is it's CHEAP and anyone can do it after reading this report. When you reach the point where hundreds of your referrals are out there posting ads and bringing in new referrals every day, you will get as excited as I did. Don't worry, I will teach you exactly what you need to know to handle the volume, or you can just sit back and let me do it for you. When you see how fast it grows, I bet you will want to jump in with both feet.

If you're not ready for a website of your own yet, have them send you an email from your ad and you can send the report back to them as an attachment. If you get them emotionally involved with your ad, it's not hard to find at least a couple to see the vision and take action.

Most of the tools (like the one I used to write this report) can be downloaded online for free if you know where to look. I use Open Office to create these PDF files and you can get it free by Clicking Here, then if you need some help learning how to use it, Click Here Next.

As long as you are in my membership program, I will be sending you new creative ads and graphics for free. Can you see that it's obviously in my best interest to help you succeed?By now you may be shaking your head and muttering something about not being able to setup your own website. I guarantee that once you find out how simple it really is, that phase of your Internet Career will be permanently behind you. Do us both a favor and watch this
short video showing exactly how to do it with free programs you already have! Click Here

Once you get your masterpiece ready, you need a place to host it online. PLEASE think twice about using a free hosting services. For Splash Pages all you need are bare-bones features and you can get them from AngryHosting.com for only $1 a month. You have your own space with no ads but yours and since you are paying, you have the right to ask for support and get it. Please mention that helpme sent you if they ask. Now that you know how to get their attention, what next? Now let me pass on my most valuable tip. You've gone to a lot of trouble to learn some skills and apply them to attract prospects, so try not to drive them away before you have a chance!

Remember, you got this far by being a trusted adviser, so stick with that role a while longer. Share all you have to help them before you even think about how they can help you. You might even end up with a good friend instead of just a customer. Don't kid yourself, I make a lot of money from all my online friends and they not only know that, they appreciate it.

Just because you end up selling someone a product or service, doesn't mean it had to be an adversarial relationship where you came out the winner. I like it best when EVERYBODY wins,
don't you? On the other hand, when I want to buy something I would just as soon one of my friends make the commission than a complete stranger. Doesn't that make sense? In my lifetime the Internet has been the most fascinating medium ever created, but it has not finished evolving and probably never will. Keep in mind that some of the material you come across is so outdated, it will frustrate you more than it helps. If you walked into a library with
nothing but old dogeared and torn books, you would probably turn around and leave, but on the Internet an old eBook can look as fresh as a brand new one if you haven't seen it before.

Build a circle of friends on the interactive websites to ask questions and share all your new discoveries. Dig a little deeper with tools like Google and YouTube before you embrace anything you find online. Soon you'll be one of those supplying the answers.

Thanks for reading,

Your Business Image: Ten Ways to Build and Market It

Your Business Image: Ten Ways to Build and Market It
Marketing strategies to build your business brand.

Building a business image is not something invented by a public relations firm: It's a reflection of what you do and how you do it. Marketing your business brand means running a first-rate business and letting people know about it. Every action your company takes sends a marketing message.
When most people think about letting the world know about their business, they imagine a clever ad. But advertising is one of the most expensive and least effective forms of marketing. After all, why broadcast your message to many uninterested members of the public, when you can address people who have a demonstrated interest in what you do, merely by creating a strong referral system?
To begin learning how to market your business effectively, check out this list of tactics.
1. Make it look good. Creating a solid, strong physical impression lends credibility to your business and invites customers in, whether you have a store front, a brochure, or a website. You'll want to suit your look to the type of business you have. An accountant's office should be well-organized and tastefully decorated with business furniture. A dog groomer might choose a whimsical design with bright colors and fun murals on the wall.
2. Create a website. A simple website is relatively inexpensive and can work wonders in terms of drawing people to your business or telling them more about who you are and what you do. Be sure to create a professional look and feel, one that suits your business, and take care to optimize your site for search engines. For more information, see Get Your Business Online.
3. Create straightforward, easy-to-understand pricing. You'd be surprised how many businesses use a complicated pricing structure -- and try to hide their prices from their customers. Streamline your pricing and make it clear, especially if you run a service business. Exactly how much can your customers expect to pay for which services? A pricing menu is often a good idea.
4. Encourage personal recommendations. The single best way to get new customers is through personal recommendations. Why? Because almost nothing is as powerful as an endorsement from a friend or relative (and because it's free). Or you can consider rewarding customers for referrals. For example, a hairdresser might give a client who has referred a friend half off her next cut. For more ideas on attracting customers, see A Marketing Strategy for Every Business.
5. Maintain good employee relations. The people who work for you can be strong assets to your marketing strategy. Employees who love their jobs and believe in your business will not only display/wear/use your merchandise or services, they will also recommend you to their friends and families. Treat them right, and they could be the foundation of your personal recommendations web.
6. Use the press. It always helps to get a little PR -- and you don't need to hire an expensive firm to do it. If you can come up with a newsworthy angle on your business (for instance, your grand opening, your "story," what you offer that's different), you can write a simple press release and send it to local publications.
7. Do a referral exchange. If there's a related business you find yourself referring clients to, or have a business referring clients to you, set up an exchange. Place brochures or cards at the other business's office (or store), and display their marketing materials in your place of business. Examples of successful referral exchanges are those between chiropractors and massage therapists, dentists and orthodontists, and financial planners and tax preparers.
8. List creatively and widely. Unlike advertising, listing your business is usually low-cost or free, and it's a great way to draw people to your business. Make sure to list in the obvious places, such as the Yellow Pages and Chamber of Commerce, and find some not-so-obvious places to list as well. For example, does your city have a website where parents make referrals about services for their children? Does a nonprofit organization in your area have a listing of businesses with good environmental and social practices? Get on as many lists as you can.
9. Maintain a customer database. A customer who used your business once will likely use it again (assuming that the customer had a good experience). Keeping an existing customer database to mail or email promotions to is much less expensive than acquiring a new one. Maintain a database with your customers' contact information, and ask customers whether they'd like to be on your mailing list to receive special offers. A direct mail campaign is much more successful when targeted to existing customers who have opted in to the mailing list.
10. Make a marketing plan. Draw up a marketing plan. A formal plan should outline your mission, and include an analysis of your market and your competitors, your marketing objectives, and marketing ideas: How do you intend to market your business? Will you use a referral program? A website? Issue press releases? Also, outline your marketing budget, set specific performance goals, and determine how and when you'll meet them. Check back regularly to track your progress

The New Economy

The New Economy
And Why Home-Based Entrepreneurs Should Be Excited About It

Finding stability in the midst of chaos
100 years ago—even 60 years ago—many, many more people than now lived and worked in the same neighborhoods, growing much of their own food, buying whatever else they needed from neighborhood businesses, and were, for the most part, more self sufficient. They knew their food was fresh and which of the locally-made products were of good quality. Now I am not going down a ridiculous nostalgia road, here. Things in “the good old days” were not all good, and we need only look at the Great Depression, the Dutch Tulip Bubble, the Dust Bowl, and other crises to know that destabilizing conditions have occurred and created havoc from time to time; but the current economic crisis and crumbling of the financial system in the United States and throughout the world has created a trend towards more small-scale, simple, controllable, and local operations that, combined with technological advances that allow us to work from home, could be creating the most monumental opportunity for home-based business entrepreneurs ever to occur. The most recent issue of Yes! Magazine (subtitled, “Building a Just and Sustainable World”) has devoted most of its Summer 2009 issue to their vision for a New Economy, and it has all kinds of implications for those of us who work from home. Order a copy now from http://www.yesmagazine.org or call them at 206-842-0216. For subscriptions, call Toll-Free: 1-800-937-4451—and no, I’m not on their payroll ;-) .
Also don’t miss our own IAHBE writer Yank Elliott’s pieces recently on opportunity in the midst of chaos and his new article on business funding from micro-lenders. This is right in synch with trends in this New Economy. As Yes! Magazine’s Executive Editor Sarah van Gelder describes the New Economy, it is “built on new forms of money, and on democratic finance and business.” People are learning that they can live without Wall Street and create a more manageable and more stable way to finance and run their businesses with local and cooperative sources. Yank has been preaching this in several of his articles, and it’s true – your local banks, your local credit unions and other local organizations may be just what you need, because most of them never forgot that they must serve rather than take advantage of their customers. I serve on the board of a local community bank, and I know that we never made a subprime loan or participated on a mega-deal. We’ve been accused of being too conservative, but we know that we’re not helping a client by making them a loan they can’t afford. Our customers know, too, that we’ll work with them every step of the way and go to bat for them as long as they’re trying. When we get out of these tough times, they won’t forget that our bank stuck by them when the going was really bad.
Less is More
Other themes emerging in the New Economy that harken back to more old-fashioned habits are cutting back, doing with less, and getting rid of wasteful consumption in many aspects of our lives. We allowed ourselves to mindlessly ratchet up our standards of living just because we could, and it has fueled an unsustainable economy which has come crashing down around us. The silver lining is that we CAN be more self-sufficient and we CAN be happier with less—much less. And guess what…these habits of thrift and lower consumption are also good for our most precious possession, Mother Earth. As President Obama’s stimulus package goes into effect, new jobs are being created to build more earth-friendly city infrastructures, weatherize homes, increase the use of renewable energy, build public transit systems, and many other projects that have been delayed for far too long. These are being done with overriding goals in mind: to improve health, happiness, and environmental quality.
What Should Home Business Entrepreneurs Do to Take Advantage of the New Economy?
Look for service opportunities to help people adapt. Perhaps you can create info-products that help people find their own opportunities in the New Economy or help them find how to take advantage of Stimulus Package monies or other funding sources that are becoming available.
Stay on top of new jobs being funded and new businesses that need subcontracted services as they crank up their own economic engines based on money flowing in from the stimulus package.
As larger businesses downsize, look for needs they may have in your area of expertise which they may be willing to outsource to you.
Look critically at your local community and try to identify gaps that need filling to be a more self-sufficient community. Is there something important that people have to drive to a big city to buy or get? That gap may be the key to a business opportunity if you can fill that need.
If you have land or a building with additional space, consider a business that creates a platform or venue for cooperative efforts of others and allows them to showcase their wares, crafts, or products: e.g., a farmer’s market, a craft store, an art gallery. By working together, you can provide them with an opportunity and provide yourself with an income stream.
Consider multiple usage of any facilities you own to help someone else and increase your own income stream. Can a congregation without a church building use your warehouse on Sunday? Do you have specialized equipment (a color copier or a copier or scanner that can handle larger-sized documents) that other home-based business owners can lease from time to time?
Donate used equipment and furniture to local nonprofits or thrift store and get a tax deduction. Don’t throw anything away if someone else can use.
The New Economy Resource Guide
If you’re interested in learning more, Yes! Magazine has compiled this large list of resources, tools, and books they used in researching their articles. It includes links to research and policy organizations that can offer further insights, suggestions, and tips.
Learn all you can about changes that are occurring. Get to know other home-based and small business owners and patronize them or refer customers to them whenever possible, especially those who are also community supporters and responsible citizens. Help organize cooperative efforts that benefit everyone. Be a positive-thinking leader in this time of uncertainty and trouble. Help as many people as you can in your community to understand and benefit from the changes, and you will be seen as someone who can be relied on and trusted. This will help you build your own brand and business and serve you well far into the future.
Home business entrepreneurs have long known the quality-of-life advantages of working from home. An economic tsunami has forced the rest of the world to look again at some things we’ve known all along. Welcome them with open arms and perhaps you’ll create yet another business niche for yourself at the same time.

Startup Opportunities

Start-Up Opportunities In Hard Economic Times

If you have been dreaming and planning to start your own business, you may be tempted to put those dreams and plans aside in the wake of all the terrible economic news you’re hearing on television and radio. Wall Street seems to be imploding, banks are failing, unemployment is skyrocketing, businesses are laying off workers, and bad economic news seems to be the order of the day. Your friends and family may be discouraging you from going out on your own right now. What should you do?
A Reality Check is in order: Choose wisely
This is not the time to be unrealistic about your plans or frivolous with your or your family’s money. If you are still employed elsewhere, take the time to research your entrepreneurial interests carefully, test your market, make sure you have the necessary capital, and try, if you can, to start out on a small scale or part time before committing full time.
Service businesses usually require much less overhead than retail or manufacturing businesses, and they are often much more easily run from your home. Think about the area where you live, what the demographic make-up of your area is, and what the needs are of your neighbors and people like you. What kinds of things would you pay someone else to do to make your life easier? In many areas, senior citizens are a rapidly growing age group, often with disposable income. They have many needs, from transportation to help with cleaning, shopping, and personal needs. Your business niche might be to meet one of those needs.
If you are still considering different types of businesses, consider industries that are known to withstand economic downturns. Conduct an internet search for “Recession Proof Jobs” and you’ll get lots of ideas. While this will pull up employment opportunities, it will get you thinking about industries that still have money and cash flow. Perhaps you could come up with a business idea that services some aspect of these industries or those that work in these industries. Consider these: Sales Reps, Software Design, Nursing, Accounting Executives and Staff, Networking and Systems Administrators, Administrative Assistants, Business Analysis and Research, Finance Staff. Technology is strong now, so maybe it’s a good time to get some more training if you need it. Mortgage broker Steve Curnutte, quoted in a Times Picayune article by Kate Moran, says “Entrepreneurs with a background in technology are perhaps best poised to make money and do some good during this period of financial upheaval.”
Conversely, avoid businesses in the industries hardest hit by the recent economic downturn: housing, construction, lending, banking, mortgages, and investing.
Take stock of your current skills, talents, and credentials
To get going with the most momentum, you should look for opportunities that are related to your professional experience or some area that you already know well so that you don’t have to start at the bottom with both knowledge and contacts. If you do stay in your current field, however, make sure that you’re not violating any non-compete agreements that you’ve signed with former employees.
Misfortune creates opportunity
Sadly, this is very true. After a hurricane devastates an area, for instance, there is tremendous opportunity for builders, carpenters, and anyone who can help those home and property owners who want to rebuild and repair and get back to normal again as soon as possible. When there is fire and smoke damage, companies who specialize in helping homeowners recover will benefit. When a bank must foreclose on a property and a family has to leave, there is opportunity for someone to be hired to come in and spruce up the house to get it ready to rent or put back on the market. We even heard a very ugly story of a unique opportunity that occurred when families who were evicted caused so much malicious damage to homes that crews were hired to come in and clean up broken glass and damaged property.
Look for Trends
One way to look for opportunities is to consider trends in society. The recent economic downturn will probably put an end to the “Bigger is Better” trend that has been going on for decades. Undoubtedly people will start downsizing and there will be more emphasis on value than on excess. People will be trying to simplify their lives. If you can help them do this, you may have a great business opportunity.
Another Trend is towards Conservation. “Green” practices are gaining in popularity and are likely to continue as resources get more scarce and people become more informed about the importance of conservation. Look for opportunities to sell products or services or consulting to help people make smart, energy-efficient decisions for themselves and their families.
As health insurance costs skyrocket and people live longer, Americans are expected to take more and more responsibility for their own health and wellness. If you can teach people how to get healthy and stay healthy – or sell them products or information that can do this – you may be able to take advantage of this trend. Trend watcher Gerald Celente calls this the “Heal Thyself” trend.
Good Expenses…Bad Expenses
Rieva Lesonsky, former editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur and author of Start Your Own Business, suggests that when starting a business in tough times, you should avoid unnecessary costs until your cash flow is sustainable. Work from home and use public places for meetings whenever possible to avoid the cost of renting space. Use furniture and equipment you already own instead of buying or leasing new, and if you must have something else, look for used equipment. Avoid expensive marketing and try to turn your customers into marketing ambassadors by making them happy and rewarding them for referrals.
There are some areas in which you do not want to scrimp and where your money is well spent. These include:
• Paying for legal advice to set up your new business as a limited liability company (LLC) so your personal assets won’t be at risk.
• Getting health insurance through COBRA from your last job, through your spouse’s employer, through AARP, or through a trade organization.
• Putting up a professional looking Website.
• Making a business plan. Lesonsky recommends Business Plan Pro (http:/www.bplans.com).
Yes, times are tough, but with the right attitude and some serious thinking and research, it could be the best time to start a new business.

Self employment the ultimate carrier

Swimming Pool Promotion:
Imagine the casual elegance of working from your swimming pool gazebo. So what if you’re among those who have lost their job in all the cuts going on in the workplace? You will say, “This is terrible. Over 500,000 jobs are being cut every single week in the US; I need a job, not a swimming pool.” Yes you do, but think about the potential opportunity you have to look around and see if a new career is in order for you. It is always the right time to become an entrepreneur and work for yourself—if you aren’t working anyway, what better thing to do than see if there is some way you can hire yourself.
During this turbulent economic period, we will seize every opportunity to show you some businesses or service niches that could interest you and become your next career. Any home-based business offers the chance to work your business just like a large corporation from anywhere in your home, from swimming pool, to bedroom, or your kitchen table. In this article are home-based operations ranging from pet sitting, through virtual assistants, to installing custom shelves and storage areas. They all offer you a promotion from your office cubicle to your own swimming pool. See if one of these fits your situation.
Fetch!PetCare
This company, Fetch!PetCare, provides a new level of service to pet owners who often require pet sitting or pet walking duties. This is a franchise company, listed in the 2008 Inc. 5000, that is within the financial capability of many home-based entrepreneurs; the opportunity is discussed later. The pet industry is number six among the fastest growing in the US, with sales forecast this year at $43.4 billion. The company uses a network of over 3,800 pet sitters. With these numbers they are able to offer on-demand emergency sitters almost anywhere they are needed to provide in-home services if customers want it. The pet business is thriving because, as the CEO of Fetch!PetCare says, "Pets don't know that we are in an economic downturn.”
To be approved for a franchise, you must have a strong credit history and a minimum liquid financial net worth of $15,000. Additional required investment varies by what your business strategy is.
A possible example is:
Initial franchise fee: $12,000
Training, advertising, and equipment: $8,295 to $24,500
Total Investment: $20,295 to $36,500
This is an attractive and inexpensive franchise for these rough times. It requires a low investment, you have a lot of on-call help so you don’t kill yourself trying to take care of your customers, and there is lots of repeat business. In addition to sitting services, there is a store offering pet and people clothes and many other accessories and supplies—another way for you to make money from the same customer base for whom you provide other services. The company provides no financing, but they will help you find sources of money through a list of microloan lenders in your state; you can see this list here.

Virtual Assistants (VAs)
VAnetworking is the largest Virtual Assistant Networking Association business network for aspiring and successful Virtual Assistants and Virtual Achievers to share, learn, and succeed! Membership is free and there are currently just under 11,000 registered members.
The Alliance for Virtual Businesses defines Virtual Assistants this way: “Virtual Assistants (VAs) are independent entrepreneurs providing professional administrative, creative, managerial, technical, business office and/or personal support services. VAs use the most advanced means of communication, and the newest and most efficient and time saving office products and work delivery, regardless of geographic boundaries. Virtual Assistants work from their own offices, on a contractual basis, and abide by an established Code of Ethics requiring integrity, honesty and due diligence.”
When VAs first came to the Internet, there was some reluctance by business owners to use these assistants. Many years have passed since then, and the fine assistants are totally accepted almost everywhere. They are not only for Internet businesses; brick and mortar operations can use them as well. No matter where you do business, a VA can cut employee costs and free the owner’s time to run the business instead of performing repetitive daily duties.
Here is a chart comparing a full time employee with a VA, which shows there may be a cost saving over $60,000:
COST COMPARISON Full-time
Employee Virtual Assistant
Hourly Rate of Pay $20 $35
Fringe Benefits @ 35%
(Health/Dental/Life Insurance, Retirement Plans) 7 None
Overhead Rate @ 50%
(Office Space, Equipment & Office Supply expense, UI Insurance, Worker's Compensation, Overtime Pay, Administration Costs) $10 None
Total Effective Rate of Pay $37 $35
Hours Per Year 2080 hrs. 480 hrs.
Total Annual Labor Cost $76,960.00 $16,800.00
This potential saving is possible because Virtual Assistants are usually more experienced, more efficient, and better connected than the employee. This means an employer needs to devote far less time to a project to get the same results, only 480 hours a year versus 2,080 for the new employee. Also, with a Virtual Assistant, pay is only for the time on a task by the minute, not for the whole day whether you have enough work for them to do or not! No more paying for socializing, hour long lunches, or frequent trips to the washroom. An employee's eight hour day can be crunched into 3-4 hours with a Virtual Assistant. With these savings, it is no wonder VAs are in continuing demand.
This business requires a minimum investment and just the normal equipment for a home office. Certification adds credibility but is not legally required. Build up a client list, which should be fairly easy in most places because a lot of business owners still don’t know about VAs. If you do your job of telling about these important workers, you will have no trouble building your business. To learn more about starting a VA business, you may want to invest in this VAnetworking e-book (http://virtualbusinessstartups.com/) telling exactly how to use their system to start your own virtual assistant business. Or do your own online research and learn more about this potentially lucrative career.
MyBargainBuddy.com
This is a business that started as a hobby, but turned out to be a very lucrative income stream. This site was developed by a stay-at-home mom. MyBargainBuddy.com has a well-designed home page which displays everything there is on the site. This includes special products, vendors, and coupons. It’s all there right before your eyes as you enter the home page.
The owner explains how she developed this profitable Website. Study what she did, and you may realize exactly how to develop a winner of your own. Here’s the story from the owner herself:
My name is Karen Hoxmeier. I own and operate MyBargainBuddy.com. As a stay-home mom with 3 kids, I've always been a bargain hunter and a coupon clipper. When I got my first computer in July of 1999, my ‘hobby’ spread to online shopping. I was surprised by all of the great deals I came across, products marked down 90%, coupon codes for $20 off or more, etc. I passed these deals along to my friends and family via e-mail.
In November of 1999, I came across a place called Homestead that allowed people to build their own free websites. No programming knowledge was required! If you could ‘drop and drag’ you could have your own website! I thought it would be fun to post my ‘finds’ on a webpage. I named my site ‘Karen's Finds’. It had about 4 pages of deals and coupon codes.
After a couple months, I discovered that Homestead sites were not compatible with WebTV and certain other web browsers. Another problem was that the pages looked different, depending on what browser you were using. A page that looked OK to one person would have pictures or text overlapping to another person. I decided to learn HTML code and move my site off Homestead.
I bought an HTML ‘how to’ book and did a little research online. After lots of trial and error, I made my own website! In January of 2000, I registered the name MyBargainBuddy.com. As time went by, I added more categories, pages, links, and offered a free email newsletter to my visitors. I never imagined my site would grow as much as it has. MyBargainBuddy.com has been featured on TV, radio, and in several newspapers and magazines.
Seven years later, I still love finding bargains. Helping others do the same is very rewarding. I enjoy hearing from people who use my website. That's what keeps me going! If you have a question, comment, or suggestion, I'd love to hear it!
Many hobby businesses don’t provide much income to their owners. Because this one does, the remarks above should be studied by anyone wanting to do this. There is also an affiliate program if you want to participate without having your own Website.
Accounts Receivables, Inc.
To remain profitable in a down economy, a business must keep its cash flow coming, especially since most banks won’t lend a dime right now. This company, Accounts Receivables, Inc., offers a full range of credit services from invoicing through any necessary collection duties, so it’s actually helping other businesses stay in business.
This company manages the entire cash part of the business from invoicing through posting of cash receipts; their clients are able to concentrate on their main business, knowing the life blood of the business—the cash flow—is continuing to operate in capable hands. The company specializes in professional services, retail, and the construction industry.
One way clients are helped is the WeCall™ Collection Program which attempts to keep outstanding balances from going beyond their due date using a non-aggressive telephone approach. This program starts at $199. There is also a third party collection service available if needed. All these programs are offered with a no collection/no fee policy. Fees are 30 to 40% in the US and Canada, 50% elsewhere.
If you are familiar with accounting or running a small business, this providing kind of service could be something profitable for your new career and a true lifesaver to lots of other businesses in your community.
XRoads Consulting
Many companies are beginning to contract out specialty services like recruiting. The owners of XRoads Consulting started in 2006 and specialize in recruiting and placement in technical positions. They say, "There are definite financial rewards to being home-based and not having the upfront overhead needed to start a business."
Services provided by this company are:
Technical Staffing
Project Managers
Vendor Management
IP Communications
Offshore Services
Their Website has a way for you to submit your resume to a Consulting Technical Recruiter, and their Resources page contains interviewing and resume preparation tips. You may also talk directly with a Technical Recruiter.
This is a business that is meant to be home-based. Many of you have sent myriads of resumes and had dealings with Human Resources at a company where you worked. If recruiting sounds interesting, and you like to interact many different kinds of people, becoming a recruiting consultant could be for you. Helping others find their dream job could be very satisfying. If you have writing skills and can help them write their resume too, you have another offering to add.
ShelfGenie
Some of the few people making money in the terrible housing market today are those who repair, recondition, or improve the livability of existing homes people have decided to live in rather than try for a sale. One such company is ShelfGenie involved with making custom shelving units.
This company offers franchises for $80,000 to about $128,000. As an owner you get home office training in sales and management. Customer appointments may be made by telephone or directly online. The appointment is for a design representative to visit the customer’s home and make recommendations for using the pre-built units made by ShelfGenie. These stock units are modified to the customer’s needs and well trained installers put them in place. The franchise owner does not have to be a skilled carpenter to operate this business—they just need to know how to contact home owners and sell them on the idea of improving the usefulness of shelves and cabinets throughout the home.
Conclusion
Faced with the stark reality of losing your job, it will help you make better decisions if you just sit and think logically about the future. High on the list will be some way to start the money flowing again. It may be time to consider working for yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of your home. If you ever get fired again it will be because of something you did, not because of an arbitrary management decision.
